LAN by Bight
The need of having width band connections is always more diffuse.
Applications always more sophisticated that use graphics, audio and video need an
always bigger band disposability. But this need frequently clashes with the
difficulties imposed by the existing wiring infrastructures; most part of offices,
hotels, houses and also historical buildings housing offices haven't high
performances cables, but frequently, simply bights used for the telephonic traffic
distribution.
To proceed with a new wiring can be a very expensive and difficulty operation, if not impossible.
The answer is the technology Long-Reach Ethernet (LRE) of Cisco
Systems. LRE, thanks its simple architecture can be easily implemented making
available , at the same time, a standard Ethernet connection and a telephonic
connection on every existing telephonic bights.
The possibility of maintaining the actual infrastructures of wiring and telephony
together with the ability of distributing the Ethernet protocol, an absolute standard
for the local ambit communications, make LRE a solution highly strategic and
competitive.
LRE POTS Splitter "mixes" the Ethernet signals and voice with a cable end while, at the
other end a unity LRE CPE divides the signal allowing the connection of
a telephone and a PC equipped with Ethernet card.
The unity LRE POTS Splitter has three interfaces:
- the first one towards the switches Ethernet LRE;
- the second one towards the telephone exchange;
- the third one towards the telephone bights that reach the different users.
The following image shows the simplicity of the solution.

The unit LRE CPE can be easily fixed under a writing-desk, but also at wall, to grant the
maximum practicalness of use.
The LRE technology allows the support of analogical, digital and ISDN telephones, while
the Ethernet is distributed with a symmetric rate transfer, in receiving and
transmission, at stupefying distances:
- 15 Mbps until 1.050 meters
- 10 Mbps until 1.200 meters
- 5 Mbps until 1.500 meters
Consider that the traditional Ethernet communications at 10Mbps does not go beyond 150
meters on cables at interlaced pairs with high performances (Category 5 or higher).

From an operative point of view, the installation of the Cisco Systems LRE solution means
to carry out some simple steps:
-
position LRE POTS Splitter and the
switch Ethernet LRE near the telephonic exchange and interconnect the two equipments
by means of a standard Telecom cable.
- disconnect from the telephonic exchange the cables spreading towards the many users
and join on a first patch panel
- connect LRE POTS Splitter with two standard cables Telco not ended, respectively to
the telephonic exchange and to a second patch panel
- connect, with two exchange cable , the ports of the two patch
panel to keep the correct association of the telephonic internal with the many users.
- install a unit LRE CPE at every user and connect to it the existing telephonic
equipment and the eventual PC.
LRE is a technology that allows to grant
all the useful band, in a convenient and easy way, giving also to the most updated
entrepreneurs, the opportunity of creating new services and new business opportunities.
